Exciting stuff to see us close-in on this kid! Good size lad. Typical that when we finally get a father-son its when the new rules are in place and we will have to pay market price for him.

Could work in our favour, if no other sides rate him that highly, we could get him for a 4th or 5th rounder, IF Ayce is regarded highly, then we have to pay, but we know we have a gun on our hands.

Remember, if a team nomintates him, then we need to use our NEXT pick to grab him, however, being so skinny, unless he is an out & out gun at junior level, i couldn't imagine clubs wanting to give up a first round for such a lanky tall kid who looks to need at least 5 or 6 pre seasons in the gym.

Looks like we'll have to pay top dollar for Ayce, a first round pick most likely.

Ayce Cordy in the pocket if Western Bulldogs play cards right

Mark Stevens | April 01, 2008 12:00am

Family pack: Graeme, Brian and Neil Cordy run with the Bulldogs at Footscray in 1982.

HE has a name befitting a lead guitarist and Ayce Cordy is already receiving the rock star treatment to match from AFL recruiters.

Cordy is considered a potential top-five draft pick in October and will provide the first major test of the league's new father/son bidding process.

The 202cm forward/ruckman is the son of former Bulldogs defender Brian Cordy, who played 124 games between 1981-88.

It means the Dogs have first rights to the 17-year-old, who was yesterday described by one recruiter as more athletic than Carlton's No. 1 pick Matthew Kreuzer.

But the Dogs will have to pay a hefty price under the new bidding rules.

Rival recruiters believe it is a formality there will be first-round bids for Cordy.

Geelong Falcons regional manager Michael Turner, who has overseen Cordy's rapid rise, yesterday declared: "From what I've seen of Ayce, if he's not a top-five draft pick, I'm a bad judge."

Under previous father/son rules, Geelong had the luxury of picking up Gary Ablett, Matthew Scarlett and Tom Hawkins with third round selections.

That will not happen with Cordy, given the excitement generated by his performance for the Australian under-17 team in a curtain-raiser to the Round 1 West Coast-Brisbane clash at Subiaco this year.

"It has already been spoken about in recruiting circles, and clubs have said to me that they will bid for him," Turner said.

If another club bids on Cordy, the Dogs must use their next available selection to take him.

For example, if the Dogs finish eighth they will have pick No. 9. If a club with an earlier pick nominates Cordy, they would have to use No. 9 on him.

If Cordy somehow slipped through to pick No. 10 before being nominated, the Dogs could use their next choice (No. 25) to nab him.

Richmond list and strategy manager Craig Cameron yesterday made it clear the second scenario was highly unlikely. "I think he'll probably be an early selection," Cameron said.

Cordy is currently touring South Africa with the Australian under-17s, learning from AFL greats Michael Voss, Mark Ricciuto, Luke Darcy and Nathan Buckley.

He will this season share his time between Geelong College, where he has a scholarship, and the under-18 Falcons. A place in the Vic Country under-18 team also beckons.

"The Dogs would probably prefer he didn't do any of that. The more he plays, the more they're going to have to give up," Turner said.

The Dogs are closely monitoring Cordy, offering him support with diet and strength and conditioning. He visited the club over the pre-season.

As a state level basketballer, Cordy also has ability to inflict damage at ground level.

"He's just so mobile, he's very football intelligent, he's got a bit of s--- in him," said Turner, who can even envisage Cordy playing on the wing for the Dogs early next year.

Turner expects Cordy to reach at least 205cm.

All the Dogs can do now is sit tight and wait, hoping he sneaks through to the second round. "This will be the litmus test of the new bidding system, no doubt," Clayton said. "He's an exciting player, for sure."

Cordy's uncle Neil, now a Channel 10 reporter, played 139 games for the Dogs and 96 for Sydney. Another Cordy brother, Graeme, managed six games for the Dogs and 21 for Sydney.

The Cordy brothers were nowhere near Ayce's height - with Brian 183cm, Neil 188cm and Graeme 189cm.

If (and that's a big IF) we have a good season and finish 6th. We could theoretically get pick 11. If Ayce is worthy of selection 5 for example, I think we will still be very, very happy to pick him up with our first rounder.

Terrible news for the kid:

Ayce in draft pack injured
Mark Stevens | May 21, 2008 12:00am

EXCITING father-son prospect Ayce Cordy needs shoulder surgery and will not play again this season. Cordy, almost certainly headed to the Western Bulldogs in the national draft, suffered an injury playing for his school Geelong College.

The 202cm forward/ruckman, the son of former Bulldogs defender Brian Cordy, will now concentrate on his VCE and have surgery when study permits.

It is a massive blow to Victoria Country's hopes in the under-18 national championships that start on Sunday, and adds further intrigue to the father-son bidding process.

Although it is virtually a done deal that Cordy will end up at Whitten Oval, the injury may deter other clubs making early bids.

Many recruiters regarded Cordy as a top-five pick. He may now slip slightly down the list.

Under the bidding process, clubs must use their next available pick if an opposition club puts in an offer.

For instance, if Essendon has pick No. 4 and puts in a bid, the Dogs would have to use their next available pick, which is now likely to be a reasonably high first-rounder.

If no club bids on Cordy in the first round, the Dogs can pick up another player and take the Geelong Falcon in the second round.

There is no way Cordy would slip through the second round as well without interest from other clubs.

Geelong Falcons regional manager Michael Turner, who has overseen Cordy's rapid rise, has said of Cordy: "From what I've seen of Ayce, if he's not a top-five draft pick, I'm a bad judge.

"It has already been spoken about in recruiting circles, and clubs have said to me that they will bid for him."

Under previous father-son rules, Geelong had the luxury of picking up Gary Ablett, Matthew Scarlett and Tom Hawkins with third-round selections.

Another reason to hate St Kilda:
Quote:
Saints to push Dogs for Cordy
Emma Quayle, Canberra | October 2, 2008
http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/saints-to-push-dogs-for-cordy/2008/10/01/1222651172055.html

AT LEAST two clubs are prepared to bid a first-round draft pick on young ruck prospect Ayce Cordy, meaning the Western Bulldogs will have to part with their first choice, No. 14, to secure the teenager as a father-son selection.

St Kilda — which holds pick 13 in the national draft — is definitely willing to part with that choice under the bidding system introduced last year, and will bid for Cordy, while a couple of other clubs including Adelaide are also considering it.

Under the new system, if a rival club puts its hand up for a father-son prospect, the nominating club must use its next choice in the draft, regardless of rounds, to choose him. If the club decides to pass on a player, the club that made the bid is bound to follow through with it. The Bulldogs' rivals are not going to let the club get away with using their second-round pick for the highly rated Cordy.

Last year, Essendon was forced to use a third-round choice on Darcy Daniher after North Melbourne bid for him for an earlier pick, while Adam Donohue and Jaxson Barham were able to be chosen with Geelong and Collingwood's final choices, after no rival club made offers.

While the first round of the draft is considered very strong, and Cordy has not played since May after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction, Matthew Drain would have a strong understanding of his talents, having been the Bulldogs' football manager until this season.

The 202-centimetre Cordy, whose father Brian played 124 games for the Bulldogs during the 1980s, played some games for the Geelong Falcons last year as a 16-year-old and toured South Africa earlier this year with the AIS-AFL Academy.

Father-son nominations are due to be lodged with the AFL tomorrow, with the bidding on Monday morning, before trade week begins.
