Unbeaten Bulldogs smash Tigers 110-63

The Western Bulldogs extended their winning start to the AFL season by cruising to a 47-point victory over Richmond at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium on Monday.

Despite being kept goalless in the first quarter, the Bulldogs had enough improvement in them to overturn a tricky deficit and win 16.14 (110) to 8.15 (63) before a crowd of 46,261.

Jason Akermanis booted three goals in the last quarter to finish with four, Lindsay Gilbee capped a good day with a long goal on the run, and Shaun Higgins (two goals) played well across half-forward.

The Bulldogs joined St Kilda and Geelong as the teams to have won all three matches, while Richmond remain winless, alongside Melbourne and Fremantle.

The Tigers began well enough, by clogging up the Bulldogs' space and playing quick, direct football which yielded three goals in the first term and a 16-point lead by the first change.

But the Bulldogs whittled back the deficit through goals to Daniel Giansiracusa and Higgins and grabbed the lead through Dale Morris, who marked Higgins' centred kick.

The Doggies added six goals to one in the second quarter and four to three in the third, although they could not quite put Richmond away because of inaccurate finishing.

But Akermanis posted the first three goals of the last term, all inside six minutes, to end the contest, and the Dogs extended their lead with five goals to one in the final term.

The Bulldogs' other good players included fullback Brian Lake, midfielder Daniel Cross and Josh Hill, whose marking and mobility made him dangerous across the ground.

Midfielder Nathan Foley was Richmond's stand-out, but the Tigers' skill level fell away badly after quarter-time.

Captain Chris Newman had a great first half but was quiet in the second, Nathan Brown improved in the second half when shifted forward, defender Luke McGuane did well and Matthew Richardson contested well as a winger before he was sent forward.

In the one heated moment of the match, Richmond's Brett Deledio lashed out at Bulldog Liam Picken, who collected his opponent high trying to spoil.

The scuffle quickly became a melee and Deledio left the ground with a cut over his left eye.

The Tigers were awarded a 50-metre penalty after the incident and Brown's kick found McGuane, but he missed the chance to extend his side's lead.

The Bulldogs took the lead minutes later.

The Bulldogs confirmed Picken was reported for striking Deledio.

What a win! Was great to see the side consistent in the final three quarters. Once we kicked our first in that second quarter we never looked like losing. Daniel Cross unstoppable.

I know at least one of the boys was very, very fired up for this one and it showed. Nothing quite like beating Richmond!

was indeed a great game, yeah this forum is seeming like a ghost forum these days, not sure where everyone went.

Certainly an awesome start to the season. Was a tad nervous since we played sooooo terribly in the first quarter but Richmond continued being crap while we lifted big time.

Dylan Addison has really impressed me with his start to the year, he's everywhere, annoying everyone, spoiling the ball out of nowhere. Massive closing speed, plus setting up play up the ground too, go dyl!

Gia hasn't had the greatest start, maybe he's carrying something. Cooney also looks a fair bit off his best. Just think what we'll be like when they get up to the best and murph's back! I think we are in desperate need of Murph for a target in the forward line.

yes i think this is going to be a big year for the dogs. premiership material methinks. very surprised at how little input there is at the board. maybe people are affected in some way by the bushfires and economy. either directly or indirectly.

yes dylan is a tough little son of a gun and gets better every year. very glad higgins is back at full tilt. he's going to be a big contributor this year too. will have to keep a close eye on gia.

murphy will be the icing on the cake when he comes back and coony when he gets back to full match fitness but for now, there is griffen, boyd and cross who can carry the load. no problema Very Happy

First things first, the status of the forum. While some have jumped (totally their choice), I've had zilch to no time to be online let alone thinking of coming to SotS unfortunately. The financial climate has been a positive and negative thing in our office, so I'm working a zillion more hours but the company is doing quite well in regards to others in our industry so I really shouldnâ€™t complain.

Saying that, thereâ€™s of course nothing stopping anyone else from putting together a lil something in regards to game day, right?

Mondayâ€™s game. I thought it was going to be a very, very long day after the first quarter, Iâ€™ll say that much. 6 measly points. The Bulldogs better not be getting a case of the Geelongâ€™s in front of goalâ€¦

Havenâ€™t seen any sort of replay, so will comment on what I remember.

Murph and Coons both back in 2 weeks. Coons really laboured against Richmond after his post-season surgery and cork against North Melbourne.

Back to Subi we go.

glad to hear some companys are doing ok in the economic climate.
the account i'm at is not doing well but lucky for me, there is another account to go to if this one folds.
very tough times over here though. lots of people out of work and losing their houses.
is it that bad over there do you think?

ok. subiaco should be a push over. the dogs have a good record over there plus wet toast are in a weakened state. the dogs in the form they're in now? it's pretty much a given... Cool

We're off to a flyer. 4-0 potentially after the Eagles game in the current climate is a better effort than 4-0 last season IMO.
