JASON Akermanis has had an injury setback, stalling preparations for his farewell season by up to six weeks. The Western Bulldogs veteran suffered a left calf strain at training last Tuesday and the club will take a cautious approach to his recovery.

Although the Dogs have Akermanis in their plans for Round 1 of the home-and-away season, the injury will significantly affect his pre-season.

Calf injuries can be difficult to shake and any further setback would leave Akermanis racing against time to secure his place in the team for the March 29 clash with Fremantle at Subiaco.

The Bulldogs want Akermanis to play at least two practice matches to prove himself ready for the tough road trip.

"When you start talking about calf muscles, you've got to treat them preciously," Bulldogs football manager James Fantasia said last night.

"He could sense it was coming. I don't think he did it too bad - it's not an eight-week job or anything - but it's enough to be cautious about.

"He's just had to lighten up from where he was. It's just slowed up his preparation now."

Akermanis, 32 later this month, is entering the final phase of the three-year deal he signed with the Dogs after departing the Brisbane Lions.

He needs eight more games to reach 300 and has spoken of wanting to reach that milestone as soon as possible.

Fantasia said Akermanis would miss up to a month, but given he is in the twilight of his career and such a valuable commodity as an X-factor forward, it would not surprise if the layoff stretched to six.

It is understood Akermanis is comfortable with giving the injury as long as six weeks to heal. He is banking on a return in early to mid-March.

He is not treating the calf mishap as a major setback and is confident he will be ready to fire against the Dockers.

Akermanis has never previously had calf problems.

He played all 25 games last year, was in All-Australian contention midway through the season and finished sixth in the club's best-and-fairest.

The best-case scenario is a return to full training in two weeks, but Fantasia said it was no time to be "silly".

Akermanis will miss the Dogs' trip to Darwin for their NAB Cup clash with Essendon on February 13.

The Dogs are taking a similarly cautious approach with several players, given their tough start to the season.

They travel to Perth in Round 1 to play Fremantle and again in Round 4 to face West Coast - a taxing start, particularly for the club's older players.

A setback for lesser teams. This team will take it in their stride.

The 'ol "old mans injury"....could be a very long final season for Aker, or if things don't goto plan, he could even pull the pin half way through.

Calf injuries finish off so many careers.

Aker is running, I'm sure L Cameron said thaton Wed night, just seems like tentative steps to me. Hopefully pulling the pin isn't the case.

Hey, let's face it, he's a big personality with a slight injury. It's news no matter how true it is. I wouldn't be worried.

If that is the case, and Aker up & running, it's either a massive beat up or Leons being optimistic, not many players can run with a 4-6 week calf injury!

Let's hope its not as bad as reported.
