AT 32, Brad Johnson may be the oldest player at his club — and one of the oldest in the competition — but the Bulldogs' captain has no thoughts about retirement

While speculation about Johnson's future was rife last year, the three-time best-and-fairest winner said yesterday that he felt confident he would be able to play on beyond 2009.

"I certainly haven't put a finish date on things yet. I certainly think that I've got a few good years left in me yet," Johnson said.

Supporting that is the fact his pre-season program has been almost identical to what his younger teammates have taken on.

"I'm doing pretty much everything which has been good. It's really based on how I'm feeling and I'm feeling pretty good," he said.

Johnson said the players are intent on building the extra capacity to take them further than the preliminary finals, where Geelong ended its season last year.

"We need to find, probably, 15, 20 per cent on last year's performance just to even compete with Geelong and Hawthorn," he said. "And there's going to be other sides that are going to step up, so we certainly need to make sure that we're going to be on our game so that we can continue to step right up there and be a force on the comp, which we know we can be."

With several players going in for surgery — including 2008 Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney (knee), forwards Robert Murphy (knee) and Daniel Giansiracusa (elbow), and defenders Tom Williams (shoulder) and Brian Lake (hip) — the Bulldogs' rehab unit has been busy over the summer. Cooney, Lake and Giansiracusa are all back in full training.

Cooney said he was feeling good. He said the players were focusing on delivering a strong performance for the entire season, unlike last year when they lost seven of their last 10 games.

"I think we've got to keep our bodies right for that second half of the year," Cooney said.

"Even a couple of seasons ago we really dropped away in the second half of the year and I think, to a degree, we did last year as well."
