Round 3: Williamstown vs Port Melbourne @ Burbank Oval

Williamstown goes into this Saturday's rivalry match against Port Melbourne full of confidence after the impressive display against Collingwood last weekend. Williamstown played an attacking fluent brand of football and were rewarded by kicking 25 goals for the match. The forward line of Patrick Rose, Dean Galea Callum Urch and Wayde Skipper was dangerous through the supply from midfielders Brett Johnson, David Stretton, Guy O'Keefe, Ben Jolley and Callan Ward. The Defence was superb led by Jason Cloke playing against his old side, Stephen Tiller, Adam Cook, James Beaumont and Scott Meyer.

Williamstown take on a Port Melbourne side that upset Sandringham by 1 point last Saturday. Port were down by 11 points at 3/4 time and stormed home through the performances of former AFL players John Baird and Corey McGrath and forwards Luke Cotchett and Adrian Bonaddio. They will prove a difficult side to defeat this week and Brad Gotch will have to his boys primed for the task to get over the line.

Wayde Skipper: hope he enjoys the sea air, 'cause he'll be playing for W'town all year

Callan Ward: absolutely gun. reads the play well, silky skills. should get a gig for the Doggies this year. already been named as an emergency.

Brennan Stack: too quiet.

Jarrad Grant: 3 goals, but very quiet. didn't notice him much

Guy O'Keefe: a game he'd want to forget. dropped marks, missed targets, turnovers cost goals

Stephen Tiller: quiet game. did a few good things, but didn't notice him much

Paul O'Shea: up against the big body of Dylan McLaren, and struggled to shape up

Peter Street: did some good things, but not involved enough for someone with AFL experience.

Seagull players:

- Dean Galea played a great game, topped with 6 goals
- Callum Lurch did some good things
- Jason Cloke is a good player, but for some reason Gotchy played him up forward for a lot of the game

Strange old game - W'town controlled the start, then let Port get into it, before Port took control of the game. Then W'town put on about 7 goals in a row, and never looked back

I cant get into these games, probably cos of my dislike for the williamstown footy club, oh well doesnt matter ill still go support the bulldogs boys.

My 3 best players on the field would be, D. Stretton, D. Galea and C. Ward with L. Picken not to far behind(hes #18 isnt he).

Seagulls soar over the Borough

Williamstown continued its unbeaten run by defeating arch rival Port Melbourne by 37 points at Burbank Oval last Saturday. The victory over Port Melbourne was our 100th ever victory over the “Burra�.

Williamstown made two changes to the side that defeated Collingwood – Liam Picken returned from injury and Cameron Lockwood from suspension. Adam Cook and Sam Reid were dropped to the Reserves.

First Quarter

Williamstown opened in a bright manner by kicking 3 of the first 4 goals against the wind. Goals to Rose, Stretton and Galea had Port on the back foot early. Peter Street was continuing his fine form and midfielders Brett Johnson, Ben Jolley and Callan Ward were prominent. Late in the quarter Port Melbourne begun to gain control and kicked late goals to reduce the lead to 6 points.

Second Quarter

Port Melbourne played tremendous football in the second quarter. Dave Fanning and Toby Pinwill were dominant for Port and up forward Pitt, Cotchett, Cain and Nahas were the spark which saw the Burra establish a 26 point lead late in the quarter. A Stephen Tiller goal after the half time siren reduced the half time deficit to 20 points.

Third Quarter

Port Melbourne kicked two early goals to stretch its lead to 32 points and looked in total control of the game. Liam Picken was moved onball and Cameron Lockwood also had an impact in the middle. Callan Ward sparked Williamstown with an inspiring passage of play against 3 opponents which resulted in a goal to Galea and then marked and kicked a long goal himself. Dean Galea was on fire up forward and Scott Meyer, Stephen Tiller, James Beaumont and Kane McKenzie tightened up back. Callum Urch after a quiet first half came to life in the third quarter as Williamstown kicked 8 goals to establish a 14 point lead.

Fourth Quarter

Williamstown continued the turnaround by kicking 7 goals to 3 in the final quarter. Stretton, Johnson, O’Keefe and Ward continued to dominate the midfield whilst skipper played well up back. Mitchell Keddell and Kane McKenzie also found plenty of the ball and Galea, Grant and Rose kicked goals to seal the game for the Seagulls.
