Seagulls too slick for Hawks

Williamstown ventured to Box Hill City Oval to take on the Box Hill Hawks in Round 19 action in the VFL last Saturday. Williamstown made 3 changes to the side which slaughtered Bendigo in the previous week – into the side came Cameron Wight returning from injury and Steven Greene and Brennan Stack were promoted from the reserves. Out of the side went Andrejs Everitt and Shaun Higgins were promoted to the Bulldogs senior side and Scott West missed through general soreness.

FIRST QUARTER

Box Hill begun the game in blistering fashion with early goals to Thorp and Morton as Tim Clarke and Ben McGlynn were dominating the midfield for the Hawks. A couple of errant shots on goal meant that their early dominance was not reflected on the scoreboard as the Seagulls settled and were able to get their hands on the ball. Patrick Rose was lively up forward and kicked 2 early majors whilst Easton Wood bombed a long goal after running off half back. Liam Picken was playing a fine game and David Stretton and Ben Jolley were continuing their fine form. Up back Stephen Tiller was providing tremendous run out of defence and Peter Street was simply too tall and strong for the Box Hill ruckmen. Tom Langlands marked and goaled after the siren to establish a 26 point lead at the first break.

SECOND QUARTER

Box Hill again started in promising fashion and kicked early goals through Boyle and Neville to reduce the deficit. Kane McKenzie was a standout up back and was being supported by Scott Meyer, Cameron Wight and James Beaumont. Up forward Matthew Little took 5 strong marks for the quarter but unfortunately his kicking for goal was wayward. The Box Hill defence were struggling to match up on the potent forwards in Wayde Skipper and Callum Urch and then Street handballed to Rose for him to kick his third goal.

THIRD QUARTER

Both sides were one man down in the second half with Ben McGlynn (Box Hill) and Brennan Stack (Williamstown) unable to resume. The Williamstown midfield were on top with Sam Reid, Guy O’Keefe, Brett Johnson, Liam Picken and David Stretton providing plenty of drive. Defender Cam Wight kicked a great goal from a stoppage and Cameron Lockwood was lively. Up forward Jason Cloke continually provided a target and roamed around the ground picking up possessions. Callum Urch was growing in confidence as he kicked his second goal as the seagulls led by 42 points at the last change.

FOURTH QUARTER

Box Hill had the favoured end in the final quarter but it was imperative that Williamstown restrict their scoring with percentage likely to decide the top 3 positions on the ladder. Box Hill refused to lay down and kept attacking which was rewarded with goals to Neville, Smithwick and Morton. David Stretton continued his brilliant form to goal and then set up Callum Urch who kicked 3 goals in the final quarter to bring his individual total to 5 and signal that he wants to play a key role in our finals campaign. Jolley and Picken continued their good form and it took a Box Hill goal after the siren to reduce the winning margin to 35 points.

RESERVES WRAP

The Reserves suffered their second defeat of the season with a 23 point defeat at the hands of Box Hill. 1st year player Luke Cartelli continued his excellent season with 31 disposals and he was ably assisted by Anthony Chiu, Matt Cravino, Nathan Black, Mitch Keddell and young Bulldogs player Paul O'Shea. This was the last home and away match for the Reserves and they will start their finals campaign this week. They will have a re-match with Box Hill Hawks in the 1st Qualifying Final at Burbank Oval from 11.10am on Saturday as a Curtain Raiser to the Seniors match against Werribee @ 2pm.

'Gulls tune up for flag assault

IT WAS business as usual for the high-flying Seagulls on Saturday.

In the penultimate round before it launches its finals assault on the 2008 premiership, Williamstown overcame a gritty Box Hill Hawks combination by 35-points.

Consolidating top spot on the ladder, the 'Gulls won 19.16 (130) to 14.11 (95) at the Box Hill Oval.

The Seagulls led all the way after dominating the first quarter in which they kicked 6.5 to 2.3.

The Hawks, to their credit, kept pace with the visitors in the second term, and in fact outscored them 5.2 to 4.4 to trail by 22-points at the half.

The Seagulls lifted again in the third quarter when they added 5.5 to 2.3 to extend their lead to 42-points. The Hawks won the last term, but could only make up a goal, kicking 5.3 to 4.2.

The various options the free-wheeling Seagulls have up in attack was again on show.

Former North Melbourne utility Callum Urch played his best game since arriving at Burbank Oval this season, proving a handful up forward with five goals.

Urch, delisted by the Kangaroos at the end of 2007 after five years on their list, has been plagued in the past by hamstring injuries and has been in and out of the Seagulls seniors this season.

But, having played the last three games in the ones now, he is running into top form on the eve of the finals.

The ever-improving Liam Picken vied for best-on-ground honours with another tenacious display in the midfield and across half forward.

Ben Jolley was also important getting forward and kicking three goals, likewise the dangerous Pat Rose, who helped himself to three goals for 48 for the year.

Nippy wingman David Stretton was busy, and Jason Cloke was a rock in a backline that at times struggled under pressure.

Forward Matthew Little kicked two goals in his second game against his old team.
