Seeing as some of use actually work during the day - got any more info?
mighty_west- 09-23-2008
Not right now, but Sandy Roberts reported in on SEN saying that they had a camera at Whitten oval all day following around Cooney, and found out that both Streeta & Westy have been told to retire.
EDIT - in dramatic circumstances - i guess that means he was pushed out!
I really thought he had another year left in him, and at least should have been given the chance to go out on his terms, it's a ruthless world we live in.

Pretty obvious that was going to happen.
I love westy and i think the club has made the right choice here.

That is a pretty huge call by the club. This is a legend of the club we are talking about. I am very surprised they haven't offered a 1 year deal.

Or at the very least give him a chance to hold a press conference and retire gracefully.

Why are Ch 7 showing a presser from the umpires who are going to make a mockery of the GF with their 'interpretations' yet nada on Westy?
Spoke too soon.

I'm of two viewpoints here:
First viewpoint: DISGRACEFUL! This is a champion of the club who stuck with us through thick and thin, and deserves a lot more respect than that.
Second viewpoint: It's encouuraging to see the Bulldogs place team over individual, this is a step towards that winning culture, winning is the trade and the core of the business and everything else needs to revolve around that. I'm not saying sell our soul, but perhaps Westy refused to lay down and die peacefully and they were left no option. We may never know.
So basically, my opinion is that if we pick up a flag in the next few years, then it was the right thing to do, but if we're going to be ruthless in some departments and not others - *cough* - Eagleton - *ahem* - then it's not the right thing to do at all.

Agreed, very disappointed if they did not offer the option of retiring.

Whilst i have no problem with the decision, even though i thought he could go one more season, it was they way they handled it, considering his status at the club and in the AFL in general.
Could you imagine Essendon doing this to Hirdy, Saints to Harvey, Pies to Bucks!!!
Westy was a 7 time Best & Fairest and Bulldogs champion, he deserved ALOT better than just being sacked.

I think it was channel 10 who said that the club doctor had told him his knee was gone and he couldn't play on it anymore. Dunno if this is the reason or just their excuse.

There's no doubt his knee was bad, obviously too damaged to be given a realistic chance of coming back 100% next season.
The only theory i came up with, was that the club didn't want to take the focus off Cooney today, being his day and leaving the next day or whenever for Westies retirement, i would REALLY hope that was the case, and somehow the media just got hold of the information.

Maybe the club did offer him that chance to do that, he could have said no.
I know this is a very tough call on a champion player not only for the doggies, but in the afl, but i still think its the right thing to happen.
