Fussy Cats not content with mere wins

Not content with merely winning, Geelong now fuss about how they kill off their AFL opponents.

"Early in the year we were winning games but we weren't doing it they way we wanted too," Cats forward Tom Lonergan said.

"The last three or four weeks we have been putting it all together."

Lonergan kicked four goals in Geelong's 68-point shellacking of Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.

The imperial victory entrenched Mark Thompson's reigning premiers as competition pacesetters and left the coach suitably impressed.

"Our quick ball use was heading to be at a level that you want to be," Thompson said.

The emphatic triumph further whetted the appetite for Geelong's fixtures against second-placed Western Bulldogs (round 16) and the third-placed Hawthorn (round 17).

But defender Corey Enright, who used his 36 possessions against the Crows with a stunning 92 per cent efficiency, said those mouth-watering matches were off Geelong's radar until after next week's clash with lowly Fremantle.

"We don't look too far ahead to be honest," Enright said.

"If you look took far ahead you lose focus and as silly as it sounds and as cliched as it sounds, you have got to take each week as it comes because every game is a different game."

But the clinical dismantling of likely finalist Adelaide, which followed a 135-point triumph over West Coast, has many wondering how consecutive Geelong premierships can be thwarted.

The Cats have lost just one game this season and boast an imposing percentage of 147.43 - more than 14 per cent higher than their closest rival, the Bulldogs.

"We obviously have a lot of self confidence and confidence with each other and that is a good thing to have," Enright said.

"We have got a lot of good players in our side but the beauty of our side is everyone plays their role well."

And the result is compelling viewing, even for coach Thompson.

"The football was good, you should just watch it rather than go to the stats - is it good football to watch? And I thought it was a pretty good game to watch," Thompson said.

"It would be great if we could crush every team every week, but everybody knows that just doesn't happen.

"We don't go out to crush teams, we go out to play the best football we are capable of playing."

OK, I know they are stupidly good at the moment. I know they are the benchmark of the competition. But if I read one more article about Geelong winning the 2008 flag, I'm "gonna spew!"!! They haven't got it in the bag just yet, and their arrogance and smugness make me hope we smash them. Not for the points. Not for our own fortunes, ladder position, etc.

BUT JUST TO SHUT THE F**KING BASTARDS UP!

It's one thing for the papers to "oooh" and "aaah". You expect that, that's their job and main function. But the players themselves are getting ahead of themselves, I don't care how many times they say they're only playing one game at a time, they already think they have it won, and are becoming more and more like the Essendon of old by the day.

They may beat us. Shit, they may thrash us. (doubt it, and hoping not) But they are not likely to convincingly beat both the Dogs and the Hawks in consecutive weeks, so hopefully between us and the Hawkers we can silence the bloody alleycat nuisances for a few weeks... The honour should not be Collingwood's alone.

Winners are grinners, and the rest can please themselves!

When the Dogs get into that position, i hope we are talked about in the same breath as Geelong as well.

I like the Cats and their arrogance. Why shouldn't they celebrate this year's success and shell-shocking their GF opposition last year? They are the reigning champions.

Good on them, they are the benchmark, if you're sick of reading about them, simple, close the window, turn the page.

Exactly right, they are last years Champions, they are red hot to go back to back, have only been defeated what, 2 or 3 times in their past 30 or 40 games, i'd be cocky as well.

Ryan, looks like you might need those tissues back!

Hey, I'm not begrudging them their success, just the way they go about it.

Hey, I'm not begrudging them their success, just the way they go about it.

No one was more smug than Brisbane in the early 00's, Essendon in 2000, or Carlton in 1995, heck, even West Coast were smug in the early 90's, Hawks in the 80's.

I haven't seen any reason why Geelong have been more so than any of those great teams in the past.

It just shows a basic lack of respect for your opposition. I would not be happy if the Bulldogs acted that way (I'd be rapt if we were in their position though!) and I would frown upon our players being smug towards the rest of the comp.

Melbourne gave us all a lesson in what folly counting your eggs too early can be.
