AFL Hall of Fame match

Vics - Johnno, Daaale and Murph

Dream Team: Coooon and Griff

I'm so torn! Griff on one side, Daaale on the other?! Thought our full back might have had a shot in the Dream Team also... is it a crime to cheer for your players if they are representing outside the Big V?

Discuss.

It is so great to see Dale in contention for this. Well deserved.

We're 4-0, averaging over 120 points per game, and keeping the opposition to under 100 points, yet we only have 5 players chosen for the squads?!!!

Congrats to the players chosen tho'!!

That means we are very even across the board. ;)

Players like Gilbee, Cross & Lake would have been in contention as well i would imagine, can't believe Brad Johnson get's in with one good quarter of footy so far this season, then i suppose he has a few credits in the bank - goes to show, players selected on name rather than performance this season.

Jeff White? :wtf:

.:LAUREN:.- 04-15-2008

and Collingwood with on 2 wins has 8 guys in the squads.. North only have 2

4GIVME- 04-15-2008

doggies40- 04-15-2008

I dont want any of the boys to play, means they have to play an extra game during the season, id rather they have the week off and keep themselves fresh for the real stuff.

Great we have a few up to make the teams tho.

Cross, Gilbee shock omissions
Jon Ralph | April 16, 2008 12:00am

BULLDOGS pair Daniel Cross and Lindsay Gilbee have emerged as the shock omissions from the Hall of Fame squads announced yesterday, with up to four in-form Dogs overlooked. Dogs coach Rodney Eade said yesterday he was happy with five selections, but "really surprised" Cross had failed to make the Dream Team.

Brad Johnson, Robert Murphy, Dale Morris (Victoria), Adam Cooney and Ryan Griffen (Dream Team) were selected for the undefeated Dogs.

But Cross, Gilbee, a resurgent Jason Akermanis and the miserly Brian Harris could not find places for the Victoria-Dream Team clash on May 10.

Akermanis has been superb this year, while Harris has given up only four goals in as many games at full-back.

Hawthorn best-and-fairest winner Brad Sewell and Roos pair Hamish McIntosh (Dream Team) and Corey Jones (Victoria) were also unlucky to be overlooked.

"I was surprised about Gilbee, and I was really surprised about Cross," Eade said.

"Cross has probably been close to our best player across the four games. Gilbee has played reasonably well, Aker has done really well, so that's surprising. I thought even Brian Lake could be selected.

"But it's pretty hard to pick the side when you have 16 clubs, so there will be some hard-luck stories."

Cross is from Albury on the NSW border and confusion over his status saw the AFL clarify his junior credentials last week.

He confirmed he belonged to the Dream Team but was overlooked by the selectors, led by Port Adelaide's Mark Williams.

The Victorian team was chosen by Victorian coach Mark Thompson, captain Jonathan Brown, and assistant coach Kevin Sheedy and released yesterday.

Premiers Geelong had eight Victorian nominations and 13 in total, while Collingwood -- overlooked in 2007 All-Australian calculations -- had eight total representatives.

Preliminary finalists North Melbourne had just two representatives -- veterans Brent Harvey and Adam Simpson -- while the Demons had only ruckman Jeff White chosen in the Victorian squad.

Players outside the squad can still gain a start, with Sheedy listing Marc Murphy, Joel Selwood, Jarrad Waite, Brett Deledio, Michael Firrito and Andrew Lovett as emergencies.

Sheedy said that while the Victorian squad was laden with talent, it would go into the May 10 game as the underdog.

"Everybody might think that Victoria might not have as talented a list as the interstate team but "don't sell us off yet".

"You never know. It will be a great game," he said.

"We just might win it. We might defeat the odds."

Sheedy said nothing less than a sell-out of the MCG would be acceptable for a game he described as "the best grudge match of all time".

Yesterday he called on the AFL to make the fixture a semi-regular game, such was the players' enthusiasm for the clash.

Coach Mark Thompson has placed no restrictions on his players participating, with Sheedy placing an emphasis on attacking, high-scoring football.

And while there have been some queries on Chris Judd's involvement, Sheedy was steadfast: "He will be in the side, don't worry about that. He will be vice captain".

"Everybody in Victoria has been waiting for Jonathan Brown and Chris Judd to come back and play for their home state and this is why this is a great game," he said.

Hey Jonny Ralph, might want to get onto your editors, Brian Harris TWICE AND Brian Lake mentioned, even after Rocket quoted Lakes name.

But everyone gets the week off so doesn't realy make a difference seeing as its only a few guys from here and there.. The team is bigger than 2 or 3 guys (coz who's saying they'll all get in)

amnesiac- 04-16-2008

Might not mean much to players in the All Stars team but to those selected in the Vics side it will mean a lot.

It's good for these players to go out and play and feel they are part of the elite of the competition.

Absolutely, and i remember in the 80's & 90's, you'd be proud as punch seeing all Footscray players run around for either The Vics, or S.A, W.A, was awesome, we had quite a few represent the Vics in the late 90's, and remember at the time, that the Dogs players were as keen as anyone else, was mentioned by the Vics coach at the time.

As for people worrying about the players getting injured, players can get injured at training, in their own bathrooms etc, for a chance to play with and against the best would be a massive honour, and very exciting.

doggies40- 04-16-2008

As much as i love watching the state games, and the games against ireland, id rather have our guys rested and ready for the bulldogs the next week, rather than worry if they get injured or something, could you imagine if the whole 5 got selected, and the whole 5 got serious injuries, its not worth it imo.

Jason Akermanis tips Geelong withdrawals
Jon Ralph | April 17, 2008 12:00am
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,23551396-19775,00.html

WESTERN Bulldogs midfielder Jason Akermanis says Geelong will conspire to pull players from the much-hyped Hall of Fame clash. Akermanis said yesterday if all 13 Geelong players were involved in the May 10 clash, it would provide a massive advantage to the rest of the competition.

The Dogs star said he was mystified by the absence of midfielder Daniel Cross from the Dream Team and questioned why the players were giving their match fee to charity.

Akermanis said clubs would rub their hands together if all 13 Geelong players suited up.

"If you are at Geelong, you would be thinking, 'How would we get one or two or three or four not to play?'

"It is great for the competition because it might even it all up in the end.

"We all get the bye, but they have to play this match. I don't think other clubs will be complaining."

The outspoken Bulldog described the decision to overlook underrated star Daniel Cross as "a very weird thing".

"Daniel Cross is a prolific ball-winner, hard as nails, runs all day. You would have thought he would have been one of the first picked," Akermanis said.

The 25-man Dream Team and Victorian sides will give their payments to charities, including the AFL Players' Association past players' hardship fund.

"I am sure there are other ways to make sure players are looked after and remunerated for their services," Akermanis said.

Gilbee queries Hall of Fame picks
Sam Edmund | April 17, 2008 12:00am
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,23551395-19775,00.html

WESTERN Bulldogs defender Lindsay Gilbee has admitted he was surprised by some of the players chosen for the Hall of Fame match. Gilbee, snubbed by Victorian selectors this week, said yesterday he was disappointed not to make the squad of 40 for next month's game.

The All-Australian half-back also launched a vigorous defence of teammate Daniel Cross, who was overlooked for the Dream Team line-up.

"I'm not being biased because he (Cross) is at my football club, but there's some guys in that team that I don't believe deserve to be there before him," Gilbee said yesterday.

"(He is) probably the most forgotten guy. We know how respected he is at our club, but I don't think he gets the respect he deserves in the competition.

"Crossy would probably be leading our best-and-fairest. I don't know what the selectors see. I don't know who picks it.

"Do they just go on . . . I don't want to say too much because I'll probably get in trouble. It would have been great if he got the opportunity, but in both of our cases we'll get the weekend off . . . and hopefully a few of the guys from the other teams get injured."

Cross was not picked, despite ranking equal-fourth in the competition for total disposals (109), averaging 27 a game. He ranks eighth for tackles.

The Dream Team squad is chosen by coach Mark Williams, assistant Neale Daniher and captain Andrew McLeod.

Big V selectors include Mark Thompson, assistant Kevin Sheedy and captain Jonathan Brown.

Gilbee said any player would love to take part in the one-off MCG game on May 10.

"I've got to admit I am a bit disappointed and I guess maybe there's some guys that got in that I was surprised by," Gilbee said.

"I would have loved to have played in it. I guess the selectors obviously didn't think I was good enough.

"But good luck to the guys who did get selected. It will be a great opportunity."

Gilbee said he was particularly happy for selected teammates Brad Johnson (Victoria), Dale Morris (Victoria), Robert Murphy (Victoria), Adam Cooney (Dream Team) and Ryan Griffen (Dream Team).

"It would be a great thing to do. It's a one-off game, it's certainly something the guys fortunate enough to play will cherish forever," Gilbee said.

"I'd never have any malice towards any other player at all. It's not them who picks the team."

Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade repeated his surprise that Cross and Gilbee were overlooked.

"There would be players in every club where there would be a few lucky, a few unlucky. But Daniel Cross and Lindsay Gilbee are probably two of ours that have played well," Eade said.
